THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF ACNE
Acne is formed when the dead skin cells clog the skin pores. The skin is constantly growing and shedding old, dead cells. But, when the skin produces too much sebum or skin oil, these dead cells start sticking together and accumulating in the pores. Bacteria named P. acne (Propionibacterium acnes, also called Cutibacterium acnes) makes things worse by causing inflammation around the pore, and as it multiplies it forms a nodule or cyst we know as acne.
Acne may look like:
- Whiteheads – pores that are clogged and closed
- Blackheads – open clogged pores that show oil and bacteria
- Papules – tiny red bumps that are the results of inflammation
- Pimples – papules that are enlarged and are full of pus
- Nodules – large, painful lumps under the skin
- Cystic Lesions – nodules full of pus
It is not clear why some people never develop acne and some are constantly plagued by them. But, some factors increase person’s risk for acne outbreaks, or make worse acne that they already have. There are three main types of atrophic acne scars:

- Boxcar Scars – oval or round scars, depressions in the skin with steep upright sides. Boxcar scars are wider than ice pick scars and they make the skin look pitted and uneven.
- Rolling Scars – they cause wave-like dips in the healthy-looking skin. Compared with boxcar scars, rolling scars are not well defined.
