The two studies below review the data…
Groundbreaking Study on BBL from Stanford University:
Rejuvenation of Gene Expression Pattern of Aged Human Skin by Broadband Light Treatment: A Pilot Study
First study to demonstrate BBL treatments can restore gene expression pattern of aged human skin to resemble young skin.
Results:
Over 1,000 gene expressions became “rejuvenated” to be more like youthful skin resulting in decreased elastosis and more uniform collagen deposition; leading to improvements in fine wrinkles and pigmentation.

Retrospective Evaluation of the Long-term Antiaging Effects of Broadband Light Therapy.
The first long-term, visual and clinical evaluation of BBL treatments.
Blinded panel of physician evaluators determined BBL treated patients appeared 9 years younger than their actual age.
Results:
“Patients who maintain a regular regimen of BBL treatments annually can reduce and delay the long term signs of skin aging in a way that looks very natural.”

Treating Skin Types III-IV with BBL:
Treatment of Multiple Skin Conditions with Advanced BroadBand Light BBL™: My Experience with Asian Patients.
Case studies demonstrating efficacious and safe treatment parameters for skin types III and IV with BBL.
Results:
Patients have seen improvements in full-face rejuvenation, solar lentigines, erythema, skin texture, and melasma after BBL treatments. The results show that two-step treatment protocol(s) with BBL alone or in combination with topical agents is safe and effective for the treatment of a variety of common skin disorders with a low risk of complications in darker skin types.

What is IPL Skin Rejuvenation?
Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Skin Rejuvenation is an ideal treatment for reducing pigmentation, redness and for stimulating collagen. Highly controlled flashes of filtered light (IPL) are directed onto the skin. The IPL is absorbed by the melanin in pigment spots and blood in superficial blood vessels, and then converted to heat. This heat then selectively destroys the pigment or vascular lesion, leaving the surrounding tissue undamaged. In fact, the heat in the dermis stimulates a healing response in the skin, which increases collagen production. The result – bright, clear, beautiful skin.

What can IPL Photo Rejuvenation treat?
We are all born with clear, smooth skin but over time, sun exposure, ageing and some lifestyle factors cause a range of blemishes to appear. Pigmentation, broken capillaries and redness are common, and these are very well treated by IPL Rejuvenation in our Floreat clinic.
Pigmentation
Sun spots, age spots and freckles, respond very well to Skin Resus IPL Rejuvenation, and generally more than 95% fading is achieved. IPL removes the areas of excess pigmentation leaving the skin smooth and even in colour. The pigmented spot gradually darkens after the treatment, so that by the next day it can look like tea leaves sprinkled across the treated area. These spots then get a drier and rougher before flaking off after 7 – 14 days, depending on the area treated. After IPL rejuvenation, freckles on the face flake off quite quickly and most are gone after a week, while spots on the hands and chest can take up to three weeks to completely go.
Broken Capillaries and Redness
IPL Skin Rejuvenation is very effective in treating the skin’s broken capillaries, rosacea and general redness. IPL Skin Rejuvenation can eliminate vascular spots and capillaries in one to three treatments. In many cases the treated vessels will disappear immediately. Other times they can shrink and go slightly dusky in colour. These will then fade over the next 4 – 5 days. Occasionally, a small bruise can occur at the site. While many broken capillaries will respond to a single IPL treatment, rosacea and general redness will always require a course of treatments to achieve the desired result. As with all treatments for rosacea, the aim of IPL Rejuvenation is to manage rather than cure.
Collagen Stimulation
In addition to eliminating blemishes, IPL acts on the skin’s dermis to stimulate collage production. The result is a reduction in fine lines and long-term improvements to the tone and texture of your skin. It’s not a face-lift, but your friends will definitely notice that your skin is looking lovely and fresh. There is also very good evidence to show that regular IPL Rejuvenations (2 – 3 per year) can reduce and delay skin ageing by reducing pigmentation, lines and wrinkles and skin laxity.
Are All IPL Treatments the Same?
In a word, no. There is a huge difference in the strength, effectiveness and safety of IPL machines on the market, and in the knowledge and experience of the operators. In our Perth clinics we use the medical strength Cynosure Icon and Palomar Starlux 500 IPL machines, which are medical strength machines and give great results. In Perth, and Western Australia, all IPL treatments are completely unregulated, meaning anyone can buy a machine and start doing treatments. At Skin Resus you can feel confident knowing that all IPL treatments are done by one of our fully qualified and very experienced Doctors and Registered Nurses.
What is an IPL Skin Rejuvenation Treatment Like?
After a thorough consultation, our Nurse will apply eye protection and then spread a thin layer of gel over the area to be treated. The handpiece will then be moved over the skin. Each pulse of light feels the flick of an elastic band. It’s best described as uncomfortable, but fast. Most IPL rejuvenation treatments in our Floreat clinic take between 15 and 25 minutes.
After the treatment, your skin may be quite pink and will feel warm, like mild sunburn, usually for about an hour. Swelling can sometimes be seen, but is usually mild, although is more notable where a lot of freckling is present. Any redness and swelling should resolve in 2 – 3 days.Makeup can be worn throughout the entire recovery. We use and recommend Jane Iredale mineral makeup, which is safe to apply after IPL skin treatments, contains a physical SPF 20 and gives great coverage. Sunscreen and sun protection is very important. We recommend the daily use of an SPF 50+ sunscreen.
How Much Does IPL Rejuvenation in Perth Cost?
The cost of IPL Skin Rejuvenation depends on the area treated. To decide which treatment is best for you, come in for a free consultation with one of our Registered Nurses.

Does IPL Skin Rejuvenation Have Any Side Effects?
IPL Skin Rejuvenation performed in our Floreat clinic is very safe, however some side effects can occur:
- Some redness or swelling may be seen after the treatment. Swelling is usually mild but in some cases can be marked.
- Crusting or blistering can occasionally be seen. This is rare but more common in darker or tanned skins.
- Hyper-pigmentation (brown spots) may occur, as can loss or reduction of pigment – both are uncommon and will usually resolve within a few weeks to months.
